The Australian singles and albums charts are usually a really fun mix of songs we know well in the US and some less familiar titles, be they from the land down under or those that just haven’t quite hit their stride yet in America. Looking at the charts in other countries can be a great way to discover new tunes that might not reach your ears here in the US, and Australia is a goldmine of great music.
This week, super producer Diplo has two top ten hits, though you might not immediately know that by looking at the ranking, as the two tracks are labeled as coming from different artists. With his Major Lazer moniker (which is a production group he fronts), he claims the number one spot thanks to his latest single “Lean On”, which features fellow electronic producer DJ Snake (famous for last year’s “Turn Down For What”) and Danish pop singer MØ. ARIA (Australia’s Billboard equivalent) reports that this marks the first time a solo Danish artist has reached the top of the singles charts.
Diplo has been busy lately, working on two new albums for his Major Lazer group, an album with friend Skrillex (more on that later), and producing a fair amount of Madonna’s latest album Rebel Heart.
Behind Major Lazer and friends is Australian electronic artist Jarryd James, whose debut single “Do You Remember” has now made it all the way to number two and is still going strong. The previous week’s number one single, Lunchmoney Lewis’ “Bills” drops from the top spot to number three. Thar track is just starting its run in the US, where it has only recently appeared on the Hot 100. Australia seems to have beaten the American market to this hit.
The next three tracks on the countdown are much more familiar. Numbers four, five, and six are Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down”, Mark Ronson’s massive global throwback smash “Uptown Funk! (ft. Bruno Mars)”, and Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds (ft. Kanye West and Paul McCartney)”, respectively.
Diplo makes another appearance at number seven, this time under his own name. Working with Skrillex (for their collaborative album under the title Jack Ü), the duo’s Justin Bieber-assisted “Where Are U Now” makes a splashy debut in the top ten.
Behind Diplo’s one-two punch is Jason Derulo’s latest “Want To Want Me”, Ellie Goulding’s Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack cut “Love Me Like You Do”, and Hozier’s unstoppable “Take Me To Church” rounds out the top ten.
So while there is some overlap with the American singles charts, the Australian rankings have enough variety here to entice those looking for some awesome new music, some of which may just become big hits here in time.
