ONLY in football could a person fly from zero to hero as quickly and as dramatically as Bafetimbi Gomis has for Swansea City.
The Frenchman was public enemy No. 1 in South West Wales at the end of January when his continual moaning and desperate calls for a transfer saw fans turn on him.
Supporters were outraged by his apparent lack of professionalism in complaining live on French television about life in Swansea.
Many fans advocated granting him his wish and selling him on the cheap to any club willing to take him off our hands while some suggested letting him rot in the under-21 side. His poor performances further angered fans, who criticised his lack of effort in games, and the striker was even booed by a section of the away support when the Swans lost 2-0 to West Brom in February.
Few people could see any future for Gomis in Swansea but with no viable alternative up front, Garry Monk persisted with the sulky striker and the transformation has been gradual but startling.
Gomis enjoyed arguably his finest day in a Swans shirt against Hull on Saturday, scoring two very well-taken goals to help Monk's men to a comfortable 3-1 win.
His first was an acrobatic thunderbolt while his second was a cool and composed chip over the keeper in added time.
But Saturday's stylish performance was far from a one-off. Against Liverpool Gomis made a nuisance of himself and was unlucky not to score. He finally found his finishing touch against Aston Villa when he netted the late winner and against Hull he was delighted with his smart brace.
Contrary to popular belief football fans are generally forgiving people. We are very patient when a player is playing poorly as long as we can see he is trying his very best.
Over recent weeks there has been a huge improvement in Gomis's attitude and his application and fans have been quick to show their appreciation. He has clearly put the transfer speculation to the back of his mind and decided to focus on succeeding at the club, leading to a huge improvement in his performances.
Gomis looks like a refreshed player and his confidence will hopefully see him net more goals between now and the end of the season. It may just be the twitter charm offensive but Gomis even seems to be enjoying life in Swansea a bit more these days.
Just a few weeks ago fans were asking which strikers could be bought in the summer to replace Gomis. Now they are asking who can be bought to accompany him.
